Top Canvas Tips

  1. Access Kanopy from the Oesterle Library's list of databases, or use the "Find my University" option on the main Kanopy page to search for and select North Central College.
  2. Kanopy accounts are optional for viewing videos, but are required for creating wishlists and playlists.
  3. To create clips of videos, first create a playlist. Next add a video to the playlist, then edit the clip to change the start and end times of the clip as desired. Playlists can include short segments of videos as well as full length films.
  4. Use the Share options to link to or embed videos, clips, or playlists in Canvas. Note that embedded media will not be accessible off campus and should be accompanied by a link to the media.
  5. Search by keyword, title, cast/crew, etc. or browse videos by category. Kanopy includes extensive categories, and provides timely collections for heritage months, current events, and more.

Sharing Kanopy Content on Canvas

To share Kanopy content on Canvas, first locate the media you want to share or embed. This may be a film, film clip, or play list.

In the Share section of the page, locate the options Share and Embed This Video

Copy the link in the Share box to create a link to the media. Copy the code in the Embed This Video box to embed the media into a Canvas page.

Embedding Videos in Canvas

On Canvas, find the embed icon. It looks like a cloud with angle brackets (chevrons) inside.

Clicking on the embed icon will open a new text entry box. Paste the embed code into this box and click Submit.

NOTE Embedded videos will not work for students accessing Canvas from off campus. Include a direct link to the media to ensure students have access to the content.

Creating Links in Canvas

Select the text you would like to act as the link. Click on the link icon, which looks like a chain, and then select External Link. A new text entry box will appear where you can paste the copied link from the Share box of a video, clip, or playlist on Kanopy.
