Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to log in to access/search for CARLI EBL e-books?

  • Because the e-books are owned by CARLI, individuals wishing to access these titles must show that they are affiliated with an institution that is a member of CARLI.

What does "browse" mean?

  • Just as in Oesterle Library, you can "browse" the full text of any e-book on EBL before deciding if you'd like to loan it. You can browse for 5-10 minutes via the EBL Online Reader, after which time you'll be prompted to create a loan, or request a loan from your library.

What is a loan, and how long is the loan period for a CARLI EBL e-book?

  • As with other library material, a loan is also required before access to an EBL e-book can be made available for an extended period of time. Creating a loan will activate full text access for the length of the loan, and enable print and copy functionality.

  • The loan period is seven days.

What is the difference between "Reading Online" and downloading?

  • Accessing EBL e-books online via the EBL Online Reader is referred to as "Reading Online". You can access the reader via the blue "Read Online" button on the full record page, or via the "Read this book" link beside each ebook listed in your search results.

  • Not all libraries enable EBL download functionality, but for those that do, EBL e-books can be downloaded for reading offline. You'll find download buttons on either the full record page, or on the "Download" tab in the EBL Online Reader. E-books downloaded to personal computers are read via Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). Please ensure you have this free software installed before downloading. Please also check the ADE system requirementsPatrons using iPads, iPhones or Android devices can download and read EBL content via the free Bluefire Reader app.

Note: If you are working on a computer that is shared by others (for example, a PC in your library or elsewhere on campus), you should always choose to read e-books online.

How many e-book titles may I download?

  • Currently, CARLI has limited individuals to 20 e-book downloads at one time.

How much can I print or copy from each e-book?

  • The Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions on each e-book restrict the amount of content that you can print and copy when you read an e-book online. Printing is restricted to 20% of each e-book, and copying 5%. Similar restrictions apply when you read e-books offline.

  • The EBL system manages these allowances on the fly. Remaining print/copy balances can be viewed for each e-book on the Details tab in the Online Reader. The EBL Print Screen will also tally your remaining print balance while you print.

Can I read CARLI EBL e-books on my portable device?

  • Patrons using iPads, iPhones or Android devices can download and read EBL content via the free Bluefire Reader app. Downloaded EBL e-books can also be transferred to any portable e-book reader that supports Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). There's a list of these compatible devices on the ADE websiteIn addition to these options, all portable devices with browser support can access EBL and Read Online via the web.

How do I create a persistent, or stable, link to a CARLI EBL e-book to use in a syllabus or Blackboard?

  • A stable link to CARLI EBL e-books can be pulled directly from the full record page in the address bar of your browser window.
  • In Blackboard, once students click on the link, to access the e-book, they may need to log in using their NCC username and password and choose North Central College from the list of institutions.
