Library Resources and Services for Students

The Technology Collection provides North Central College students with access to technology that supports college curriculum. Items in this collection include scientific calculators, laptops, and external disc drives for viewing films. These items check out for a week at a time. 

Technology Lending Policies

These policies apply to the laptops, calculators, and other technology equipment that the Oesterle Library makes available to NCC students for check-out. 

  • When saving files, students will need to use cloud storage or a USB drive. Once the computer goes to sleep or is turned off, the computer will delete any files added to it during use. Students are responsible for their own files. 
  • Laptops and other technology may be taken out of the library. 
  • Only one device per type (ex. One laptop or one calculator) may be checked out at any one time per person. 
  • Any problems with the device should be reported upon returning the device. 
  • The laptops, calculators, and other equipment are available for check-out by NCC students in good standing only. Students in good standing are students without currents fines on their library account exceeding $25. 
  • All students checking out equipment must have a current Technology Borrower Agreement on file. Technology Borrower Agreements are good for one academic year at a time at a time. 
  • Borrowers must adhere to North Central College’s “Statement of Acceptable Use of Information Technology” section of the Student Handbook on pages 42-47 while using devices checked out from Oesterle Library. 

 

What technology is available for checkout at Oesterle Library and Learning Commons? 

  • Scientific Calculators

  • USB Disc Drives

 

How long can I check out technology? 

Items in the technology collection check out for 7 days. Loans for these items may be renewed in-person if there is no waiting list. Students wishing to renew items must have the device in hand when requesting a renewal. 

 

Can I place a hold on checked out items? 

Yes. Students can place holds on items in the collection that are currently unavailable using the item's record in CardinalSearch. As items are returned, students students with holds will be notified in the order holds were received. 

 

What are the fines for overdue items? 

Unlike other materials in the Oesterle Library, items in the Technology Collection will accrue fines if returned late. Fines for overdue technology collection items are $25 per day. Replacement fees will be charged for lost or damaged items, and will reflect the cost of the item which may exceed $1,000. 

Available Technology

TI-84 Plus CE with Python Calculator 

The TI-84 Plus CE makes comprehension of math and science topics quicker and easier. The built-in MathPrint™ feature allows you to input and view math symbols, formulas and stacked fractions exactly as they appear in textbooks. By adding a Python version to the TI-84 Plus CE graphing family, students can learn to program using the same dedicated, distraction-free tool they are already familiar with from math and science classes. 

Laptops

Specialized software is not available on Oesterle Library laptops. Basic software is available.

Mini DVD Player 

For students who need to watch films on DVD for courses (or for fun!), this mini DVD player is an easy solution. The player is region free, and supports the playback of CDs, DVDs, DVD-R/+Rs, DVD-/+RWs, CD-R/-RWs, VCDs, SVCDs. Blu-rays are not supported

Included with this item is an AV cable and an HDMI cable. These two common ports will be available on most TVs.

USB Disc Drive / External DVD and CD Drive  

This external disc drive provides an option for accessing DVD or CD content on their computers. The disc drive comes with both USB 3.0 and USB C connectors, and is compatible with Windows and Apple operating systems.
