Smith Hall

Smith Hall is located on the second floor of Old Main. Permanent equipment for this meeting space includes a networked computer, data projector, VCR/DVD player, electrically lowered projection screen, lecturn, and overhead projector.

 

Smith Hall must be reserved before use.

A Word About the Room

Tables, chairs, microphone and podium are furnished by Maintenance; requests should be directed to 637-5660.

The computer, data projector and VCR/DVD player are stored in the locked closet on the east side of the room. For most events, the requested equipment will be set up prior to use. In some instances the equipment cannot be set up and the user will need to gain access to the closet and set up the equipment on their own.

Setting Up the Computer and Projector

1. Move equipment from closet to meeting room. The computer is on one cart, and the VCR/DVD player and data projector are on a separate cart.  
   
2. Place the computer close to the group of floor outlets located in the northeast corner of the room. These outlets provide power, network access and carry the data from the computer to the data projector.
   
3. Flip open the covers of the floor outlets.
   
4. Plug in the cart's electrical cord, CAT 5 network cable and the data cable. The cables are all unique, so they cannot be plugged into the wrong outlet.
   
5. Move the data projector cart to the floor outlets near the center of the room.
   
6.Flip open the covers of the floor outlets.
   
7. Plug in the data cable and power cord.
   
8. Lower the projection screen by pressing the rocker switch down. The switch is located next to the lighting controls in the doorway at the northeast corner of the room.
   
9. Dim the room lights by pressing "9" on the light control panel located in the doorway at northeast corner of the room. (only the lights that are near the screen will turn off, leaving plenty of light for note-taking and other activities).

Using the Computer and Data Projector

Follow the directions for #5 -9 above to connect the projector to the electrical power source and to lower the screen and dim the lights.

A. Turn on the computer and monitor.  
   
B. Turn on the data projector using the power button on the upper righthand side of the control panel.
   
C. Wait for the lamp to warm up and the image to become bright.  
   
D. Press the input button to select "input A" to show the computer image on the screen.
   
E. Aim the projected image at the screen by moving the cart slightly left or right. Turn the lens to focus the image if necessary.  
   
   

When positioned over the floor outlet in the center of the room, the Data Projector will be very close to fitting the screen.

Using the DVD/VCR and Projector

Follow the directions for #5 -9 above to connect the projector to the electrical power source and to lower the screen and dim the lights.
The data cable does not need to be plugged into the floor receptical

a. Move the data projector cart to the floor outlets near the center of the room.
   
b. Plug power cord into floor electrical outlet  
   
c. Turn on data projector by pressing the power button on the upper righthand side of the control panel.
   
d. Press the input button a few times until the projector displays the video input.
   
e. Lower the projection screen by pressing the rocker switch down. The switch is located next to the lighting controls in the doorway at the northeast corner of the room.
   
f. Dim the room lights by pressing "9" on the light control panel located in the doorway at northeast corner of the room. (only the lights that are near the screen will turn off, leaving plenty of light for note-taking and other activities).
   
g. Aim the projected image at the screen by moving the cart slightly left or right. Turn the lens to focus the image if necessary.  
   
h. Turn on DVD/VCR by pressing the power button on the DVD/VCR.  
   
i. Insert a DVD or videotape into the machine and press play.  
   
j. Audio for the DVD/VCR is played through the external Anchor speaker located on top of the DVD/VCR. Audio level adjustments can be made by turning the volume knob.
