Instructional Media Lab
The Instructional Media Lab is available to all North Central College faculty, staff and students who wish to create multimedia presentations. Specialized equipment and software are available to perform a variety of tasks including: Digital image manipulation, video duplication, video editing, video conversion, audiotape duplication and digitizing video and 35mm slides.
In addition to creating multimedia presentations, the Instructional Media Lab is a place to explore and learn to use instructional media equipment.

A wide variety of multimedia presentations can be created in the Instructional Media Lab. Among the most useful resources for North Central College faculty and staff are:

Projects in the Instructional Media Lab
The following is a brief list of projects performed in the Instructional
Media Lab.

Project: Capture Video from Analog Source
Process:
1. Connect analog video source (VCR, camcorder, etc.) to Pinnacle Moviebox DV
2. Open Pinnacle Studio software
3. Select the Capture tab
4. Select Moviebox DV from the capture source
5. Press play on analog video equipment to begin playback
6. Press "start capture" to begin the capture process
7. Press "stop capture" to stop the capture process
8. Add any titles and transitions if desired in the Edit mode
9. Insert blank DVD in drive and select "Make Movie" to begin the DVD making process
10. DVDs take a long time to render on a computer, the DVD will automatically eject when finished.
Project: Place video clips in a PowerPoint presentation
Process:
1. Determine what clips are needed to project. (Copyrighted clips must be under 3 min. in length unless approval is granted by copyright holder)
2. Digitize video from DVD and/or VHS using Pinnacle MovieboxDV hardware and software
3. Edit clip and insert titles as needed using Pinnacle Studio software
4. Create movie using Pinnacle Studio software (movie can be MPEG, AVI, WMV or RM)
5. Save clip to network drive or removable media.
6. Open Power Point presentation and insert the video by choosing "Insert movies and sounds..." "Movie from File..."
7. Select "Automatically" or "On Click" when this box pops up: "How do you want the movie to start in the slide show?"
8. Save
Project: Create DVD from Video taken with Digital Video Camera
Process:
1. Connect digital video camera to IM Lab computer using a firewire cable
2. Capture the video using Pinnacle Studio software
3. Perform any editing as needed.
4. Use Pinnacle's "Make Movie" process to create a DVD from the captured clips.
Project: Digitize 35mm slides for use in PowerPoint
Process:
1. Select 35mm slides to digitize
2. Open Photoshop or Irfanview software
3. Insert 35mm slide into slide scanner
4. Select Acquire in Irfanview or Import in Photoshop and choose the scanner as a twain source.
5. Make color corrections and rotations as needed.
6. Save image to network drive or removable media.
Project: Convert reel to reel audiotape (or any audio format) to CD
Process:
1. Insert reel to reel tape into player
2. Connect reel to reel tape player to audio in on computer
3. Open Audiograbber software
4. Select "line in sampling"
5. Press the record button on screen
6. Start reel to reel player - recording will begin once audio starts.
7. Each audio track is saved to the C drive, select them and burn them to a music CD.
Process:
1. Obtain any necessary authorization before duplicating a copyrighted work.
2. Insert DVD you wish to copy into DVD ROM drive on computer.
3. Insert blank DVD into DVD writer on computer
4. Open Roxio CD/DVD software
5. Select copy disc from the main menu.
6. Select source and destination drives
7. Press burn icon to burn disc.

Process:
1. Place VHS tape to be copied into VCR labeled "master"
2. Place blank VHS tape in VCR labeled copy.
3. Make sure the input on the copy VCR is set to "Line 1"
4. Press record on the copy VCR
5. Press play on the master VCR
6. Press stop and remove tape when it reaches the end
Project: Convert VHS Tape to DVD
Process A-Using DVD Recorder:
1. Place master VHS tape in VCR labeled master.
2. Place blank DVD in Panasonic DVD recorder
3. Select input source for DVD recorder
4. Select record on DVD recorder
5. Press play on master VCR to begin playback
6. When program has ended, press stop on DVD recorder
7. Using remote control, use the menu features to finalize the disc (this allows playback on all other DVD players and takes about 5 minutes)
8. Remove DVD and VHS tape.
Process B-Using Pinnacle Studio Software:
1. Place VHS tape in VCR/DVD player
2. Open Pinnacle Studio software
3. Select the Capture tab
4. Select Moviebox DV from the capture source
5. Press play on VCR to begin playback
6. Press "start capture" to begin the capture process
7. Press "stop capture" to stop the capture process
8. Add any titles and transitions if desired in the Edit mode
9. Insert blank DVD in drive and select "Make Movie" to begin the DVD making process

Project: Convert Mini-DV tape to VHS
Process:
1. Place mini-DV and blank VHS tape into the mini-DV/VHS converter located in the Giere Audiovisual Center in the library.
2. Press the DV button.
3. Hold the DUB button for two seconds.
4. The tapes will automatically rewind and begin copying.
5. The machine stops automatically; remove tapes.
Project: Transfer Images from Digital Camera to Computer
Process A-USB:
1. With camera turned off, connect USB cable from digital camera to computer
2. Turn camera on
3. Locate files using "My Computer" - usually the H drive "removable disc" on the IM Lab computer.
4. Highlight the images to be copied and select copy from the menu
5. Locate or create a destination folder on the C drive or network drive
6. Select the folder and choose paste from the menu.
7. Turn off camera
8. Unplug USB cable from computer when it is safe to do so.
Images may now be burned to CD or DVD, or transferred to a flashdrive
Process B- Memory Card
1. Insert media card into media drive on IM Lab computer
2. Select the drive using "My Computer" (drive letter depends upon which memory card type is used)
3. Highlight the images to be copied and select copy from the menu.
4. Locate or create a destination folder on the C drive or network drive
5. Select folder and choose paste from the menu
6. Remove memory card from media drive
Images may now be burned to CD or DVD, or transferred to a flashdrive

Overview
- Training and support for the Instructional
Media Lab is provided only by the Instructional Media Coordinator.
- All applicable copyright laws must be followed while using the equipment in
this facility.
- The lab may only be used to create materials for College related courses and
activities.
- Care must be taken when using equipment. The user will be responsible for
any damage to equipment.
Access
The Instructional Media Lab is open to North Central College faculty, staff and students.
The Instructional Media Lab is open by appointment only when the Instructional Media Coordinator is on campus, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Assistance
The Instructional Media Coordinator provides training for all of the equipment and processes in the Instructional Media Lab.
