The Deep Web:
How to find web pages hidden from search engines

The World Wide Web has a lot more to offer than just the top ten hits from a Google search. The sites below help you find information on the web, using not only Google, but a variety of other search engines, indexes and portals, some of which are specifically tailored for academic or scholarly research.

Directories: Selective Web Search Tools

Unlike Google, which attempts to automatically index as many websites as possible, regardless of their quality, the directories listed below index only sites pre-selected by human editors (often scholars, professors, librarians and other experts) for being trustworthy and high in quality. These directories contain lists of links organized hierarchically by subject, and they often provide access to information not indexed by search engines like Google. You might want to try using some of these directories to search the web first, as there's a good chance you'll find better sources of information more quickly than if you'd used an ordinary, undiscriminating search engine.
