College Archives Exhibit
Summer 2001
Literary Societies at North Central College began almost as early as the college itself, reflecting an attitude of 19th century educators that felt these associations helped build moral character, provided forensic experience, and prepared participants for a responsible public life as well as increasing mental alertness and discipline. The societies' stated purposes were the cultivation of a literary taste and general improvement in the arts of public reading, speaking, and debate.
